Tag Questions

Tag questions are added after a statement.

For example ‘You do like him, don’t you?’

If your voice tone rises at the end, then this is a true question that asks the listener to agree or disagree. If, however, your voice tone drops at the end, it has the effect of a statement that expects the listener to agree. A good example is telling off a child with something like ‘That was really naughty, wasn’t it?’

This tag question with the voice tone dropping at the end paces the listener’s inclination to mismatch and disagree because you have already put the disagreement in the statement for them. The listener will be more inclined to accept the statement as true without thinking about it any further.
